Day 33 – World Cup History: Host selection

Week 4

Lesson

Topic Point: The host(s) for the FIFA World Cup is selected via bids fromcountries followed by an exhaustive ballot vote. If a country is not selectedby a majority vote, the country receiving the fewest votes is eliminated and anew round of voting takes place. The voting and selection occur approximatelyseven years before the World Cup.

The first World Cup was held in Uruguay. However, in 1930, travel for the national teams across the Atlantic was a3-week boat trip. Therefore, only four European countries competed. The nexttwo World Cups (1934 and 1938) were held in Europe. The initial understandingwas that the tournament would alternate between the Eastern (Europe) hemisphereand the Western Hemisphere (the Americas). When the 1938 World Cup was awardedto France, most of South America boycotted the tournament.

From 1950-1998, there was a routinealternation between Europe and the Americas, except for 1954/1958 (both held inEurope). In 2002, the current bid and voting system was implemented with a moreglobal perspective. Since 2002, Asia hosted two World Cups and Africa hostedone, along with one in South America and two in Europe.

Ted Lasso: Thereis no reference to World Cup hosts in the show. The 1994 Nigerian World Cupteam that Sam Obisanya references in S1E5 played in the United States as wewere the host of the 1994 World Cup. The 2014 England World Cup team played inBrazil (the jersey which Jaime Tartt got for Roy as he was a member of thatsquad).

Soccer-related note: The 2030 World Cup will be the 100th anniversary of thefirst Cup. It will be co-hosted by Morocco, Portugal, and Spain. There willalso be three ‘centenary’ matches held in Paraguay, Argentina, and Uruguay. Thematch in Uruguay, including a centennial celebration, will be held at EstadioCentenario in Montevideo, the stadium where the 1930 World Cup Final wasplayed.

The 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup will beplayed in Brazil June 24-July 25. It will be the first Women’s World Cup to beheld in South America.

American Sports comparison: The venue for Super Bowls is selected at an NFL owners meeting. After selection of a venue, the chosen site will develop a hosting proposal. The league will then vote on the proposal to declare it acceptable. There arevarious requirements that must be satisfied including the host stadium must bein the market of an NFL team, have a minimum of 70,000 seats, and have spacefor a GameDay experience and pregame entertainment area that is within walkingdistance of the stadium.
