Day 3 – The National Team I

Topic Point: Selection to the National Soccer Team may be the pinnacle of success for a player. This team is different from the Men’s Olympic Soccer Team due to Olympic rules (The Olympic men’s soccer team is closer to an amateur team and not represented by the absolute best players in the country). The National Team changes, month to month sometimes, as the manager and coaches will want to see and develop a variety of players to field the best team for a particular competition, deal with injuries, and allow players time off for rest and recovery.
National Team players do not have to play for a club in their country. As the United States National Team members gained exposure and improved talent, many received offers to play in Europe.

Ted Lasso: The first time a national team is mentioned is in S1, E5 when Sam Obisanya mentions the Nigerian National Team, the country he is from. National Teams are brought up again in S3, E10 as some Richmond players are selected to represent their countries in matches (International Break will be discussed later).

Soccer-related note: International soccer developed after club soccer and was initially limited to the Olympics. The World Cup was the brainchild of the FIFA president in the early 1900s, and the first World Cup took place in 1930 with 13 teams.

American Sports comparison There may not be one. The closest is Olympic basketball, and as quite a few countries elevated the quality of their play, the Olympic basketball competition is stiffer compared to when the first Dream Team was assembled in 1992. Baseball has a World Baseball Classic, and ice hockey has several international championships, though arguably the Olympics are the most prestigious.

Admittedly there may be bias amongst soccer fans, but there does not appear to be any sports equivalent to the FIFA World Cup in terms of number of teams competing, the grueling nature and duration of qualifying, and the actual tournament itself. March Madness has a different formula that creates urgency, drama, and is unforgiving – the win-or-go-home format. It ultimately, though, is a component of a regular sports season, much like the NBA, NFL, MLB, NHL, or MLS. The various soccer leagues around the world, and club competitions, are annual, too. The World Cup is not simply about soccer; it is about national pride and only takes place every 4 years. Many good national teams fail to qualify for the World Cup. The World Cup is a different beast. In this sense, the Olympics are the only thing that come close. Even that seems to pale in comparison, as attention is spread out over numerous events (329 medal events, 48 disciplines, 32 sports for 2024 Summer Olympics).
