53 A third-place match was not played in 1930. There is debate about whether one was never scheduled or if it was scheduled and Yugoslavia refused to play due to complaints about officiating in their semi-final match against Uruguay. Reports suggest that both teams received bronze medals, however a retrospective FIFA evaluation in 1986 ranked the United States as third based on goal differential.
